In today's society we live in constant contact with each other as technology and the digitization of society has brought humans closer and closer together. All across the globe people are connecting with each other through what is known as the cyber world. This advancement in the way humans communicate and engage each other has garnered many great things and helped us as a society in many ways to learn about the world and stay up to date with what is occurring. However, there are glaring drawbacks and unfortunate things that happen because of the platform that technology and things like social media and the Internet have given everyone.

In high school I read a book for one of my classes called "No More Victims". The book covered the affects of bullying and how its negative impacts can be carried with victims of bullying of the rest of their lives. Bullying in schools and on play grounds amongst children is very much a problem, but now cyberbullying has emerged in the past decade as an even more sinister concern.

According to the article I found, Cyberbullying is regarded as, "Someone using digital technology, such as the Internet, emails, text messages, or social media, to harass, threaten, or humiliate you". Cyberbullying is such an issue because of its nature, anyone is capable and able with the platform that these various things like social media and email allow. Additionally as the article goes on to state, "cyberbullying does not require face to face contact or physical power".

So how do you deal with this new type of bullying?

Its important to remember some things about traditional bullying...

Ultimately, the bully is the person with the problem. Inherently a bully knows that what they are doing is wrong, yet they continue to bully.
The bully is usually an unhappy person, trying to get a rise or response out of the person they are bullying. Do not give into their poor attitude.
Do not dwell on someone who is trying to bully or speak negatively or bad about you.
Boost your confidence by having things to do on a regular basis and regularly exercising.

In regards to cyberbullying...

The article specifically states:
Do not respond to any messages or posts written about you as it will only make the situation worse.
Save any evidence of cyberbullying and report it to an adult or appropriate authority figure.
Report more serious threats of harm or sexual harassment to police and local authorities.
Prevent communication from cyberbullies by blocking them from contacting you if able.

In the end, protecting yourself against cyberbullying is about taking the necessary preventive measures and taking the appropriate actions in response if you are being bullied. It is also our responsibility as a society to make other accountable and push back in the right ways against any bullying.
